Medicare Supplement Plans Explained Simply
Medicare Supplement plans help cover the out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare doesn’t pay.

What a Medicare Supplement Actually Does
Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) helps pay for hospital and doctor services, but it does not cover everything. Medicare Supplement plans (also called Medigap plans) help pay some of the remaining costs such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.
Under Original Medicare, you are responsible for certain out-of-pocket costs. For example, Part A includes a hospital deductible for each benefit period, and Part B typically requires you to pay an annual deductible and about 20% of the cost for most doctor and outpatient services. Original Medicare also does not include a maximum out-of-pocket limit, which means your share of costs could continue if you require ongoing care.
Simple Breakdown of the Most Popular Plans
Plan G
Plan G is one of the most comprehensive Medicare Supplement plans available today.
It helps cover most of the remaining costs after Medicare pays its share, including coinsurance and hospital costs. The main expense not covered by Plan G is the Medicare Part B annual deductible.
Because of its broad coverage, Plan G is commonly chosen by people who want predictable healthcare costs and fewer unexpected medical bills.
Plan N
Plan N usually has a lower monthly premium than Plan G but includes some cost sharing.
With Plan N, you may pay small copays for certain doctor visits or emergency room visits. This plan is sometimes chosen by people who want to balance monthly premium costs with occasional copays.
Plan F
Plan F provides the most comprehensive coverage of Medicare gaps. However, it is no longer available to people who became eligible for Medicare after January 1, 2020.
Individuals who were eligible for Medicare before 2020 may still be able to enroll in Plan F if it is offered in their area.
Helpful Note
Although many Medicare Supplement plans exist, Plan G and Plan N are currently among the most commonly chosen options for people becoming eligible for Medicare today.
